What are Social Work Students’ Perceptions of the Community Practice Method?

Summary. A unique aspect of the social work profession is the combination of intervention on the personal, community, and societal levels and their interaction. The purpose of this research is to determine students’ perceptions of community practice. Qualitative research was conducted among Israeli social work students before gaining any practical experience in community practice. Findings. The results demonstrated a change in students’ perceptions of the importance of community practice to the profession, and the factors that contributed to this change. Applications. Recommendations that may contribute to changing students’ perceptions of community practice are offered to educators.     

Legitimating the Philippines as a language learning space: Transnational Korean youth's experiences and evaluations

This paper examines how a peripheral English‐speaking country is constructed as a legitimate language learning space in the global English language teaching (ELT) industry by investigating South Koreans’ recent engagement in Philippine English education. It focuses on a short‐term English study abroad program, in which the Philippines serves as a transit place prior to students’ moving to a Western English‐speaking country. Drawing data from ethnographic research on South Korean youth studying English abroad, the article analyzes why Korean students seek Philippine English education in spite of their apparent pursuit of authentic English, and how they evaluate their learning experience in the Philippines. This paper finds that the Philippines holds a niche market in the global ELT industry by separating a space for English learning from other public and everyday spaces of English use and offering pedagogically intensive but emotionally supportive environments to English learners.     

Multicultural education in Thailand

This study examines multicultural education policy in Thailand. The researcher used the qualitative research methods of interviewing, observation and document examination to obtain data. Theory about multicultural education was used as a theoretical framework. The sites of study were eight primary schools that served students from diverse cultures – Muslim, Buddhist, Burmese, Cambodian and Thai – in the southern provinces of Thailand. Results showed that current educational policies do provide opportunity for migrant students to access public education. The Ministry of Education has allowed schools to apply their own rules and regulations that reflect the diverse cultures of their students. The results also show that the curriculum includes references to various cultures, that textbooks contain content that encourages students to live in harmony with people from different cultures and that some schools have implemented bilingual education programs. However, deeper analysis of school practices made it clear that what seems to be an acceptance of cultural diversity is just another form of assimilation. The well-established features that define Thainess remain intact and the inclusion of culturally specific content is insufficient to change the unequal power relations among dominant and minority groups in Thailand.     

An exercise in futurity: servitude as pathway to young Filipino men’s education- to-work transition

This article examines how young Filipino men looking to work in international seafaring deploy servitude as a means of attaining education-to-work transition. It focuses on those applying to work for free as ‘utility men’ (gofer or flunkey) in Manila’s manning and crewing agencies that supply seafarers to ship operators around the world in exchange for the promise of boarding a ship. Based on participant observation and life history interviews, the article accounts for how they transform their servitude into diskarte – strategy by which they navigate the limited employment opportunities in the Philippines – by constructing their ‘utility manning’ as an informal and negotiated pathway to employment. The young Filipino men’s seeking and enduring servitude, geared towards gleaning better social possibilities, becomes a profoundly rational act of investing in and securing their future.     

研究生培养政策70年:演变逻辑与发展走向

新中国成立70年来，我国研究生培养政策经历了初创起步、推进发展、稳步延伸和调适深化四个发展阶段。在演进逻辑上，凸显出国家需求与市场诉求的权衡性、培养目标注重个人成就与社会发展价值的双维导向、培养质量保障体系趋向质量和效益二维共进等特征。研究生培养政策是个动态发展系统。随着时代的发展和变迁，应在政策制定和发展的动力机制、政策目标的价值导向、政策执行的监督评价及保障决策等方面作出适时调整。     

Let the right one in: A Bourdieusian analysis of gender inequality in universities’ senior management

This article examines the lack of gender diversity in senior management positions in professional staff in universities. These results are analysed via a Bourdieusian analysis of economic, social, cultural and symbolic capital. Through a purposeful sample of senior professional staff working in universities in three countries: Australia, Canada and the UK, six career‐enhancing strategies needed for career success were determined. The article critiques the resource‐based view of career capital and argues that capitals accumulation for career success can be understood by considering the concepts of symbolic violence and habitus as a way of understanding intra‐cohort differences. It proposes that by considering both the subjective and objective cultural constructs via habitus, and by acknowledging the importance of symbolic capital and symbolic violence towards women, this may be one way of increasing female representation in senior management.     

管辂易学研究——兼论术数学的思维方式

易学可以分为两部分:理论的层面和术数的层面。学界以往对易学的术数层面关注较少，一是缘于学者对“术数”的偏见，二是术数学自身缺少系统性反思的理论大师。三国时的管辂便是试图对术数学进行理论说明的人。牟宗三曾经藉由管辂来研究中国传统的一类知识系统，但尚有许多内容待发掘。管辂说“善易者不论《易》”，这是对术数易地位的辩护，同时也是对经学易和玄学易的回应。这种反对，不能从象数和义理对立的角度去理解，而应从文本和实践的区别来认识。管辂认为，术数的根本在于“神”，这个神不是玄学或思辨意义上的“玄之又玄”，而是实践意义中的通感和知几能力，它奠基于人自身的命限和气质中。但对于神的体悟又不能仅仅等同于“直觉”和“神秘主义”，因为它对于表现的通孔———象，以及工夫论基础，都有明确的要求。在这里，我们看到了不隶属于理性、直觉或神秘主义的一种独特思维方式。     

升平之境:从《意大利游记》看康有为欧亚文明论

本文以康有为完成于1904年底的《意大利游记》为说明性个案，试图呈现其欧亚文明论的基本面貌。文章将文本与这位“先时之人物”所处的时代相联系，勾勒出康氏的旅欧行程、意大利考察和文明叙述的轮廓，梳理了康氏在其“异域志”中表达的有关升平一统（帝国）、中西文明之异、文明关联互动等看法。文章指出，《意大利游记》是古代华文异域志的近代遗响，而康有为借之表达的看法，实构成一种“文明-现代性”主张。本文为作者所写有关法国社会学年鉴派文明与文明研究构想之论文的续篇。文章指出，康有为对文明的界定与其同龄人涂尔干的看法有诸多相通之处，但也有不同点：康氏与涂氏都将现实发生的文明界定为“超社会现象”，视其为国族与世界之间的中间范畴，但相比于从结构观点看文明的涂尔干，康氏在考察文明的存在方式时更关注其历史的治乱轮替动态，也更为重视其政体实现形式。文章最后，作者思考了20世纪康氏欧亚文明论的遭际，指出相比“国族营造”之社会科学，康有为融通“我他”文明的叙述依旧有其启迪。     

沙水游戏在幼儿科学教育中的运用

沙水游戏包括玩沙游戏、玩水游戏、沙水结合的游戏。沙水游戏在幼儿科学教育中的价值主要体现在激发幼儿对自然界的好奇心,培养其专注度；激发其探究欲望，培养其探究能力；积累科学经验和感性认识，促进科学认知发展；帮助建立正确的科学前概念等方面。因此，应该积极利用沙水游戏来开展幼儿科学教育。     

Racial battle fatigue and activist burnout in racial justice activists of color at predominately White colleges and universities

Activist burnout scholarship has inadequately considered challenges marginalized-identity activists, such as racial justice activists of color, experience in the course of their activism – challenges from which privileged identity activists, such as white racial justice activists, are protected. This article attempts to address this gap through a phenomenological study examining activist burnout in racial justice activists of color whose primary sites of activism are predominantly white colleges and universities in the United States at which they work. In order to stretch activist burnout theory to differentiate unique marginalized-identity activists’ burnout causes from general causes that do not consider specific activist identities, the lens of racial battle fatigue is employed. Findings show that, although participants shared many causes of burnout that are consistent with general non-identity-specific causes described in existing literature, racial battle fatigue hastened their burnout while their activist commitments elevated their battle fatigue.
